History of music videos

The History Of Music videos

What are music videos? A music video is like a short film except it is accompanied with a chosen song, we use music videos to promote artists songs to hopefully bring together target audiences and increase sales, music videos can make artists well known and grow their popularity.

1964 The Beatles

In 1964  (The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The  members being John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the foremost and most influential music band.)
The beatles produced a feature film called 'A hard Days Night' This album caught a glimpse into footage of the beatles performing their songs, over the years many more short films of the beatles are made in order to promote their songs in their albums in which bought more artists of the era to start creating short films to use as advertising.

(The Beatles 'A Hard Days Night'

1981

                              (MTV commercial 1981 ^ )

In 1981 the first 24 hour music channel was launched MTV, due to this channel being created many artists starting having their songs produced and it became normal for songs to be accompanied by a music video for promotion purposes for the artist. Around this time directors explored music videos and started to make story lines and effects.

Micheal Jackson - Thriller was recognised as the most influential music video of the decade costing around $500,000 and a length of 14 minutes, which we can agree now would definitely be consisted a short film in the comparison now of music videos being maxuim of 4 minutes long in length. The 90s gave directors the fame they should be rewarded as they started to show the directors names in the music video and of course the artists. In which if we compared the starring of the directors now we notice how all music videos promote the directors.

Early 2000s

The launch of the Itunes store 2001, the Itunes store was the newest way of watching music videos, and was easy to type in a song you wanted to listen to and you had it in the palm of your hands, the Itunes store then lead to music channels like Top of the Pops being cancelled in 2006 due to online access being so easy to watch instead of having to wait weekly for a showing of music videos on Top of the Pops.

In 2005 then launched youtube another site in which you are able to watch music videos for free, music videos were constantly viewed daily, leading to more loss of channels because much easier online websites were accessible.

2008

In 2008 Spotify launch Spotify is another online site which allows uses to listen to music, this site is made more for listening to music rather then watching music videos but is a main site of artists to use to promote their music because it provides rights which protect the content from media companies.

When researching the history of music videos, i learnt how many online music streaming services have grown and replaced others that didn't work as well for consumers. Its made me think about how my music video will be presented on other platforms and how i can promote my music.

Music Video Regulations

Music Regulations

The bbfc also known as The British Board of Film Classification,Is a independant organisation of which controls regulations with moving image and has classified cinema films since 1912 and videos/DVDs since 1984. Their job is to make all moving image productions to be suitable to the audiences by age restrictions.

The bbfc with regulations involving music videos- The bbfc wanted to improve
the consumer awareness about content within certain music videos to improve the child protection online. In order for this to happen they partnered with Vevo and Youtube (the top social networks in which music videos are watched on) Working with these companies was to aim to make a permanent pilot scheme to age rate all music videos by artists signed to Sony Music K,Universal Music UK and Warner Music UK, that are unsuitable for younger children under the age of 12. The ratings appear on Vevo online and Youtube.

Licensing Of Music

VPL is a company in which deals with the licensing of music videos when they're either played in public or a broadcast on the TV,This company then distributes the fees this costs as royalties to its right holder members. VPL is PPL's Sister company

Performing Rights Of Music

The PRS pays the royalties to its members Their members being people paying a PRS license, in which songwriters will sign up with this company and give PRS permission to rent their songs to third parties whenever their works are: broadcast on TV or radio. performed or played in public,                                                                  whether live or through a recording. These Performing rights royalties are paid
to a songwiriter whenever their music is played or performed

How I learnt about Licensing companies (https://youtu.be/Mwx9m6-z0fE)

Ofcom, short of office in communications, is a regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the UK. Ofcom has many powers across the television, radio, telecoms and postal sectors, as well as a statutory duty to represent the interests of the consumers by promoting competition and protecting the public from harmful or offensive material.

The Mechanical CopyRight Protection Society
The MCPS representents the songwriters ,composers and music publishers so they collect their royalties whenever their music
is reproduced as a product ,this being CDS,DVD's, any form of downloads as well as broadcasting and online copies, as they act
on behalf of its members by negotiating agreements with those who record and distribute products containing copyright and
collecting the licence fees for this use.

Looking into Music Video Theorists

Here I started looking at music video theorists to help me with my music video

Sven E Carlsson
Sven E Carlsson said that ‘one of the most common methods of analysis is to break up the music video into black and white boxes. Almost everything is then perceived as opposites- trash or art, commerce or creativity, male or female, naturalism or antirealism'
Meaning that a common approch in music videos is that binary opposites are what make the narrative of the music video. He beleves that there are two categories that music videos fall into. One beinf Performance - This is where the audienece are able to see the artists sing, dance and act throghout the music video. And conceptual where videos are when the audience watch different surrounding objects other then the artist in the music video.
Sven elabuated the theory of Modern Mythic Embodiment which illistrates performers are restricted in the way that they can perform as they are being used for their voice, lifestyle and face, this could be down to the artist selling this way in their body language.

Goodwins Theory,Goodwin has 5 key points which he beleives are shown in music videos.

Goodwins theory
1. The Relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.
-This meaning the themes, mise en scene and events of the video match with lyrics of the song, to help to portray the message of the song

2. The Relationship between the music and the visuals.
-This is the cuts and edits of the video that are in sync with the rhythm and beat of the song, matching cut or effects to specific drum beats or notes (mostly seen in pop music videos)

3. Music videos have genre characteristics
- The certain features that are expected out of a video depending on the genre of the music. for example - a girl band like 'little mix' will be expected to have dancers and close ups of the singers to show off the group.Where as on the other hand a Indie band are expected to have performance shots of the band and cut to a fast beat with mostly dark scenes.

4. Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist, the creation of a star image to promote a recognisable brand image
-This helps the record label to promote a set image for the band, which will help target audiences empathise with the band, making advertising easier to grab the audience.

5.‘looking’
He beleives there is a emprases of looks and angles of women in order to entice males interest in that partical artist with the lyrics of the video to these shots are represented.

When I started looking at these theorists I learnt how others see music videos and how many have similaraties and when creating mine i will be trying to see if my music video will live up to these theorises.
