History of music videos

The History Of Music videos

What are music videos? A music video is like a short film except it is accompanied with a chosen song, we use music videos to promote artists songs to hopefully bring together target audiences and increase sales, music videos can make artists well known and grow their popularity.

1964 The Beatles

In 1964  (The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The  members being John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the foremost and most influential music band.)
The beatles produced a feature film called 'A hard Days Night' This album caught a glimpse into footage of the beatles performing their songs, over the years many more short films of the beatles are made in order to promote their songs in their albums in which bought more artists of the era to start creating short films to use as advertising.

1981

                              (MTV commercial 1981 ^ )

In 1981 the first 24 hour music channel was launched MTV, due to this channel being created many artists starting having their songs produced and it became normal for songs to be accompanied by a music video for promotion purposes for the artist. Around this time directors explored music videos and started to make story lines and effects.

Micheal Jackson - Thriller was recognised as the most influential music video of the decade costing around $500,000 and a length of 14 minutes, which we can agree now would definitely be consisted a short film in the comparison now of music videos being maxuim of 4 minutes long in length. The 90s gave directors the fame they should be rewarded as they started to show the directors names in the music video and of course the artists. In which if we compared the starring of the directors now we notice how all music videos promote the directors.

Early 2000s

The launch of the Itunes store 2001, the Itunes store was the newest way of watching music videos, and was easy to type in a song you wanted to listen to and you had it in the palm of your hands, the Itunes store then lead to music channels like Top of the Pops being cancelled in 2006 due to online access being so easy to watch instead of having to wait weekly for a showing of music videos on Top of the Pops.

In 2005 then launched youtube another site in which you are able to watch music videos for free, music videos were constantly viewed daily, leading to more loss of channels because much easier online websites were accessible.

2008

In 2008 Spotify launch Spotify is another online site which allows uses to listen to music, this site is made more for listening to music rather then watching music videos but is a main site of artists to use to promote their music because it provides rights which protect the content from media companies.

When researching the history of music videos, i learnt how many online music streaming services have grown and replaced others that didn't work as well for consumers. Its made me think about how my music video will be presented on other platforms and how i can promote my music.
