Timing Deconstructions Of My Music Video
Here are my timing deconstructions for my music video, I have deconstructed to every second of my chosen music. In these deconstructions you will see how I have prepared my locations, mise-en-scene as well as my camera angles down to each second, in order to create my choice of style in my music video I need fast pace shots and a variety of them, in this case I have many shots within seconds to show the upbeat genre I am following as inspiration.
Here are my timing deconstructions:
From doing these timing deconstructions it has prepared me further into making my music video as I am now more aware of each shot and also on the timings I have to perfect for each clip, this also showed me that when I come to editing this planning will help assist me in achieving each part in my music video.

My ideas towards creating my Record Label
I started looking for inspiration for my Record label by looking on pinterest for ideas.
I first off decided to look at geometric shapes for my logo:

All this designs I started looking at and deciding if I would like them for my music record logo. I decided to look at geometrics because they reminded me of the kind of patterns you can sometimes see with the electronic
genre. As you can see I also started looking at wave lengths as a music label and i would have my name in between the bumps of the wave, but I also wasn't a fan of this idea.
I decided to think about my genre as a new artist and
what I wanted represented. Thats when I thought
about I wanted my label to be more like summer. So I decided to look into more summer based illustrations and look inspiration from them.
Summer Illustrations
I saw these as record labels for electronic music videos, but I wanted mine to fit my electronic idea of summer.

So I started looking on Pinterest again for inspiration to do with summer logos, I saw many that I liked the idea of and decided I wanted to make a logo involving a palm tree and my name for my record label.

Costume & Props In My Music Video
A Prezi Of my mens costume in my music video.
https://prezi.com/view/OwQGGgOt6geZHgWjxRO3/
For my music video I want a male to be the main focus of the video due to my music video being sung by a man. I also want some shots of a women with him because I want to make my music video more relatable to couples.
Womens Costume
I want a women in my music video to dress very casually with some elemnts of dressing 'summery'
These are the sort of causal outfits I would like my women artist to wear.
I also want my artist to wear some branded items to bring in the target audience and fit the rich lifestyle my genre is like.
Womens Props
My women's probs consist of:
I want my model in my music video to wear a luxurious dressing gown to flow in the wind for a couple of my shots. I think this will make my model look elegant and will show the audience her lifestyle.
I want my model to wear 'summery' hats to make her look as if she's aboard because its rare to see people in this type of hat in other places.

Music Video Institutions Research
https://prezi.com/view/t2cxZoE9kILqN6QH9d0A/
From my research on Music Video Institutions I learnt the different companies in which produce music in different ways, by signing and believing in artists to help them grow as well as promoting their music promptly and efficiently in different ways. I also learnt how most music companies are conglomerate companies in which produce their own production. As well as learning about the main music institutions which have grown the most success as well as having help from their 'parent' companies.

Conventions of music videos
Research on Music Video Conventions
When deconstructing music videos by genre I found myself seeing many differences and conventions seen in each genre, so I decided to categorise these conventions I spotted.
For my Media Studies A2 Practical work I have chosen to do a Music video. To further my knowledge of the music video productions I plan to carry out conventions of Music videos. In my research I then plan to look at different music video genres to broaden my ideas of what sort of video I would like to do, and to see what stereo typically each genre has in their music videos.
House/Electronic Music Videos:
- These music videos are usually shoot in Club/Party/Festivals/landscapes/natural (beaches, woods)
- They use bright colourful lights used to give party/electronic effect, as well as outside areas with sunsets and colourful natural settings
- Features varieties of people, dancing/having fun with friends
- Camera shots usually distorted/fast again to emphasise dance movements and beat of the music, they then feature long shots to show landscapes/clubs/fans
- The video is often fast paced, often not many lyrics but electric sounds
- A lot of quick shots are used to emphasize beat of the music and show the fun within the beat
- Don't often follow a story line/ Narrative as limited Lyrics in the songs
- Very instrumental ,meaning all clips are quite random but show fun and show they're having fun to the beat.
Example: https://youtu.be/knd9bJr2AFQ
Pop Music Videos:
- Close ups to show excited emotions on the face of the artist
- Camera shots (most hand held, following the artist or star of the music video)
- Artist genuinely dressed bold bright colours wearing lots of makeup, statement jewelry ,woman often wear provocative clothing this is used as a selling point
- Artist performance, the person who made the song is usually the star of the video.
- The performance of the artist usually very upbeat, with fun and fast dancing
- Some artist use themes to represent the song, those themes usually include relationships/breakups/parties
- Bright clothing, bright backgrounds.
- Usually Young people feature throughout
- Subtle relating lyrics to music video
- Use of video editing (slow motion making the video look dramatic as well as speed ups to give the look of upbeat vibes)
- Most have inappropriate language to show rebeliance and fun
- Bright lighting to make the surrounding more colourful and fun
- Most scenes are full of action, due to pop music videos being related to young people, they want to make all the clips full to keep younger people intrigued.
Example Pop Music Video: https://youtu.be/7hPMmzKs62w
Rap/ Hip Hop Videos:
- Recognized brands/clothing high end
- Expensive Cars
- Mostly shot at parties, rich houses/mansions ,clubs ,pools
- Camera shots tend to be long establishing shots/long shots, to show off wealth and big locations
- Which there is then fast shots to emphasize the beats in the music
- Close up shots to show jewellery and assets of the artist, can include "merchandise" created by the artist with their name on etc.
- Attractive woman and men (women wearing tight clothing, men stylish)
- Doesn't tend to follow storylines, it’s more fun random shoots with some relation to the lyrics
- Artist is featured throughout most the video, especially during rap in the song
- Once again colourful but sometimes more subtle ,clothes are bright but paired with 'normal' clothes (statement items of clothing)
- Lots of dancing, very chilled.
- Not much crazy lighting, normal/natural lighting.
- Different angles, low (showing the artist is important)
Example Videos: https://youtu.be/uxpDa-c-4Mc
Alternative Rock Videos:
- Use of black and white filters gives a sense of nostalgia
- Mostly old artists starring in the video
- Some clips could be bad quality to show ageing.
- Dark lighting, to show dark vibes with most of the lyrics not being happy
- Usually consist of a unique narrative/storyline
- Some clips could be bad quality to show ageing, and shots can be deliberately blurred or appear unprofessionally filmed to give a personal feel to add to the unique alternative style
- Long shots are used to show whole bands together or concerts at which the artist is playing at.
- Due to dark lighting most alternative videos have light studio lights to light up faces of artists, with not much else lit up (artificial lighting)
- Shows can be mostly following shots/hand held
- Mostly male artists
- Shots based around instruments and close up of artists singing/playing instruments etc.
Example: https://youtu.be/Tm8LGxTLtQk
Rock Music Videos:
- Dark clothes (mostly black ,white ,grey)
- Tends to be black and white (because rock is stereotypically thought to be old as rock was very popular back in the 70s/80s)
- Artist is featured throughout, they are often shown to be playing an instrument, often uses moments from concerts and past memories
- Use of extreme close ups, long shots, quick cuts to emphasize the music, also showing the artists up close then showing their audiences (at concerts etc)
- Lighting usually dark, but with bright lights occasionally (often if filmed at concert)
- Usually has a storyline, mostly about moving on, growing old etc
- Not very high quality clips, showing old artists.
Example: https://youtu.be/hH_j_GjNKaY
Metal Music Videos:
- Very similar style to rock music videos
- Usually have a deep storyline
- Black and white colours, both costume and backgrounds
- How the music videos are set out, is unusual which can make them memorable to audiences
- Stereotypically the music videos are about depression and death, very gruesome, most about war and fighting
- Dark lighting
- Voices sound deeper the other genres
- Fast and distorted camera shots, often used to emphasize the heavy music and make it seem realistic
- These videos can have extreme make up often worn (sometimes masks in cases of bands like slipknot) very bold clothing choices and unique outfits (some outfits can be historian)
- Close ups of Artist to show emotion and power within their voices at loud lyrics

Types of Music Videos
Different Types of Music Videos
A Narrative Music Video
- A narrative music video is a video that consists of mostly a storyline which relates to the lyrics of the picked genre video. This music video technique is increasingly used to engage the audience, A video consisting mainly of a story line relating to the lyrics and genre of the song. A song that is a example of this is 'love story by Taylor swift' where Taylor uses narrative to tell a love story through her song which contains romantic scenes and flashes in and out through reality of school to locations of a love story in a vintage castle. This way of narrative can make certain audiences relate and interrupt the lyrics through there everyday life.
A Performance Music Video
- A performance music video focuses on showing footage of the artist or band either in a casual environment, i.e. socialising with friends, or performing, live performance or staged performance. This style of video uses the band/artist/group throughout the majority of the production and the artist, band members are often miming the words to the song. This genre of music where performance videos are common is mostly indie and rock. Most music videos use this type on technique because the costing on this type of production is most likely to be the lowest as the producers are in effect giving the audience the most realistic image of the band as it is only the band they are showing.
A example of a music video that uses performance is Beyonce's 'Single Ladies'
Concept based video
Concept videos are based around a single idea or concept and are usually unusual and obscure, even surreal for the audience. This unusual content is an attraction to many consumers, which draws them in. Concept videos usually are combined with one of the other two styles as the market demands. A successful concept video will keep the audience entertained and constantly looking at what or who is on the screen. No particular genre or type of music is more likely to use concept videos, in fact a range of artists covering all genres have used concept/ art based videos.
Here is a music video called 'take care' by drake. Throughout the music video its unclear what its meaning and consists of mainly videos of the artist drake singing in-front of a plain video, we then see him hugging a women (Rihanna) another artist and a bull. Making it very unclear what is going on in the music video as its unusual.
By looking into music video types its made me familiar with what sort of styles attract audiences and how to make my music video clear to which style I choose. It also made me think about how each style could make me engage with my audience further.
