Different Types of Music Videos
A Narrative Music Video
- A narrative music video is a video that consists of mostly a storyline which relates to the lyrics of the picked genre video. This music video technique is increasingly used to engage the audience, A video consisting mainly of a story line relating to the lyrics and genre of the song. A song that is a example of this is 'love story by Taylor swift' where Taylor uses narrative to tell a love story through her song which contains romantic scenes and flashes in and out through reality of school to locations of a love story in a vintage castle. This way of narrative can make certain audiences relate and interrupt the lyrics through there everyday life.
A Performance Music Video
- A performance music video focuses on showing footage of the artist or band either in a casual environment, i.e. socialising with friends, or performing, live performance or staged performance. This style of video uses the band/artist/group throughout the majority of the production and the artist, band members are often miming the words to the song. This genre of music where performance videos are common is mostly indie and rock. Most music videos use this type on technique because the costing on this type of production is most likely to be the lowest as the producers are in effect giving the audience the most realistic image of the band as it is only the band they are showing.
A example of a music video that uses performance is Beyonce's 'Single Ladies'
Concept based video
Concept videos are based around a single idea or concept and are usually unusual and obscure, even surreal for the audience. This unusual content is an attraction to many consumers, which draws them in. Concept videos usually are combined with one of the other two styles as the market demands. A successful concept video will keep the audience entertained and constantly looking at what or who is on the screen. No particular genre or type of music is more likely to use concept videos, in fact a range of artists covering all genres have used concept/ art based videos.
Here is a music video called 'take care' by drake. Throughout the music video its unclear what its meaning and consists of mainly videos of the artist drake singing in-front of a plain video, we then see him hugging a women (Rihanna) another artist and a bull. Making it very unclear what is going on in the music video as its unusual.
By looking into music video types its made me familiar with what sort of styles attract audiences and how to make my music video clear to which style I choose. It also made me think about how each style could make me engage with my audience further.
